Download Backup and Sync

The first step is to download the backup and sync app. You can download it from the Driver’s website, or you can Click Here to download. Once you press the download button, you will be asked to agree to the terms of service, once you hit the “Agree and Download” button, the download will start. After the download, you need to double click on the “installbackupandsync.exe” file and follow the on-screen instructions. Once the installation is completed, you will have to restart your computer.

Signing up and Folder Selection

Now that you have downloaded the app, the next step is to sign up and select the folders that you want to back up. Launch the app on your PC, and sign in with your Google account. If you don’t have a Google account, simply click on register and make a Google ID. After signing in, you need to select the folders that you want to back up. You can select specific folders, or you can back up your entire computer. However, Google offers only 15 GB as free storage for all kinds of data. If you want more storage, you can always opt for their $1.99 per month package. In this package, you can enjoy up to 100 GB. The interesting thing is that if you add anything new in the folders that you have backed up, the newly added content will automatically get updated.

Besides updating your PC data, you can update data from your Tablets, mobiles and other devices. For this, you first have to plug in your device to your computer, then click on the USB Devices and SD cards option located the bottom of the screen. Now select all the files that you want to back up on the could from the connected device.

Change General Settings

Once you have select the data that you plan to keep on the drive, there are certain settings that you need to pay close heed too, so that everything goes according to your liking.

Video and Photo Upload Size:

As you can figure out by the name, you can define the size of the photos or videos that you want to upload. The good news is that Google does not use up your storage space if you let it compress the size of the photos or the videos. However, if you want to save them in their original size, this will take up the space offered by Google. Also, a photo that is greater than 16 MB will be compressed to 16MB, likewise, a video that is higher than 1080p will be resized to 1080p.

Removing Items: There are three ways of deleting your files backed up by Backup and Sync.

Remove items Everywhere: If you delete something on the computer, it will automatically get deleted from the drive and vice versa.

Don’t Remove Items Everywhere: Deleting from one place won’t delete data from the other. For instance, if you remove a set of files from your computer, they won’t get deleted from the drive and same is the case with the drive.

Ask before Removing Items Everywhere: If you delete something from your PC, Backup and Sync will ask you whether you want to delete it from the Drive as well or not. The same work when deleting things from the drive.

Google Photos: Enabling this option will automatically upload images to Google Photos but if you don’t enable this option, the images will be uploaded to the Driver, but you won’t be able to see them in Google Photos’ account.

Other Settings: There are a couple of other settings that you can access from the Google Drive and Setting tab located on the left side of the screen. Some of these settings include a warning sign before you delete something from the shared folder, or should Backup and Sync launch as soon your computer is turned on or not and much more.

Viewing Back up Files

To view the backup files, head to Google Drive website and tab on the ‘Computers’ tab located at the left side. There you will be able to see all the updated data each in a different folder. Click on the folder that you want to view.
