It’s been over a month since Google officially launched Android 8.0 Oreo and no wonder one of the first mobile phones to get latest Oreo update was Nexus 6P. Same is the case with the latest September Security Patch update of Android 8.0 Oreo OPR3 Factory Image, which has just been released by the tech giant.

Google incorporated some major technology defining features in the latest Android Oreo such as picture-in-picture display for multitasking, better battery life by narrowing down the background apps’ activity have been added. New and more life emojis like have been added to Android 8.0 by Google since emojis have become a form of conversation where people look for the most appropriate emoji to convey their feeling instead of writing in words.

Another feature “notification channels” allow the users to put the notifications on snooze and they shall reappear at another time with the same priority as initially the notifications had appeared. Google has also added Autofill API in Android 8.0 Oreo. This was the only way for acknowledging the worth of password managers and thus listening to the call of Android users, at last. On battery life , Google has surpassed itself with narrowing down the boundaries of the apps running at the back and consuming the smartphone’s battery, draining it consequently, way quicker than needed.

In September security patch update, many bugs which were troubling the users in the last build have been fixed and improvement have been made for stability and faster speed.

Pre-requisites

To update your phone to the latest Android 8.0 Oreo factory image, you need to have the following.

USB Drivers:

Nexus 6P USB drivers should be installed and running on your system. You should have the latest version of these drivers.

Backup:

There is always a chance that you might lose all your data, especially when something goes wrong during the updating process. So, it is imperative that you make a backup of all your data including contacts, files, calendar events etc.

Unlocked Bootloader:

If your bootloader is not unlocked, you will lose all your data. To ensure that your data remains intact, you should unlock your bootloader beforehand.

ADB & Fastboot:

Make sure you have ADB and Fastboot installed and configured on your device.

Things to Remember:

  • This tutorial is only for Nexus 6P, we are not sure that it might work on any other phone or other variants of Nexus 6P.
  • Before starting off with the tutorial, you should first read each step very carefully.
  • USB debugging mode must be enabled.
  • OEM unlocking should be done on the device before hand.

Complete Instructions How to Update Nexus 6P to Android 8.0 Oreo Official Factory Image:

Step 1: Start with downloading the Android 8.0 Oreo Factory Image (sailfish-opr6.170623.012-factory-8ada9373.zip for your phone on your computer.

Step 2: Connect your PC to your Nexus device via USB Cable.

Step 3: Ensure the installation and configuration of the Fastboot on your PC.

Step 4: Turn your Nexus 6P off and turn it in back on into the bootloader mode. To do so, press and hold the power button along with both Volume up as well as the volume down button. Keep on holding till you see a start on the top of the screen.

Step 5: Once you have extracted the downloaded files on your system, you need to go the sailfish-opr6.170623.013 folder. It does not matter where you extract the files, as long as they are extracted on your computer. Now copy all the files in the above-mentioned folder and paste them in the fastboot directory. If you have set up your fastboot directory using our tutorial, there is a high possibility that the platform-tools folder located in the SDK directory of your Android is the fastboot directory.

Step 6- Perform the following steps from the factory image files located in the fastboot directory.

Linux: Run file “flash-all.sh
Mac: Run file “flash-all.sh” using Terminal.
Windows: Run file “flash-all.bat”.

That is all for now, you should wait for the process to finish. Once done, your phone will reboot again and it might take about 5 minutes to start. So, hold your horses. After that, you are good to go.
