Samsung has always managed to come up with something extraordinary and they have done it again with the new ISOCELL sensor technology. The technology that is going to be the future of all smartphone cameras. The new range consists of ISOCELL dual, Slim, fast and bright features. It is also rumored that Galaxy Note 8 is going to have a dual camera with ISOCELL sensor technology. Let’s learn all there is to know about this amazing piece of technology.
What is ISOCELL
IT is a camera technology that Samsung has been working on for quite some time. It was first introduced back in 2013 inside the Galaxy S5 Flagship. Since then it has improved and enhanced, now it seems that Samsung has finally managed to nail this CMOS image sensor technology, that does not use the conventional back- and front-side illuminated sensor technique. On the contrary, this ISOCELL is using a 3D-Backside Illuminated-Pixel technology.

This technology comes with Vertical Transfer Gate and Deep-Trench Isolation, both these things improve and enhance the ability of the camera to capture light. Although, the main idea of this technology was to reduce the crosstalk issues between small pixel sized camera sensors. The camera that is placed in smartphones has infinitesimal pixels that are also closely packed together. Due to which the light bleed between the RGB is inevitable and this results in added noise which is called crosstalk. With ISOCELL, Samsung is able to reduce the crosstalk.
In-depth Analysis of Latest Sensors
Samsung has divided its technology into four different packages, however, one still can do a break down based on common features, listed below.
Over the years, a number of mobile manufacturers have introduced the idea of dual cameras. Finally, Samsung has decided to make the move. They are now sure about their ISOCELL Dual technology in which they are implementing the RGB plus the monochrome sensor configuration for better results.
With ISOCELL there is going to be noise reducing in low light situation, this is something that single sensor mobile cameras are unable to do so.Samsung Dual Camera offers two 13-megapixel sensors, one is the black and white and the other one is RGB. Both these sensors have autofocus technology and both have smaller 1.12 µm pixel sizes than the other 1.4 µm sensor that is incorporated in Galaxy S8. To reduce the entry of light, Samsung has also introduced f/2.0 aperture. Nonetheless, we will be seeing a variation of features in different cameras.
One might think that in this setup, light sensitivity might be a bad idea, but the key point to remember here is that monochrome sensor is bound to benefit from reduced crosstalk, thus improving the overall sensitivity to dark and light. When RGB is combined with the above data, it is bound to generate more dynamic results as compared to a single sensor.
The company claims that their bright sensors are bound to deliver sharper and brighter images. They also say that bright sensors will produce images which will have low noise and high color fidelity in them. However, this statement does not reveal anything of importance about the ISOCELL Bright sensors. There is a rumor that the company is going to follow the idea of large sensors to capture superior light. For them, they believe that 1.4 µm is a good option. It is highly doubtful that the company might go as far as using 2 µm as done in HTC’s One M8 mobile phone.

This again we believe is a rebranding trick for Samsungs’ already existing technology. Samsung introduced their PDAF technology back with their S7 flagship and they have incorporated this technology since then in all their high-end smartphones. Their PDAF uses a different technique for finding the object’s distance, that is they use the phase of light that hits different points at the sensor’s pixel. Also, for autofocusing, the dual pixel technology of Samsung uses all the pixels instead of a limited number as it was done traditionally. Initially, this technology is going to be incorporated only in high-end mobile.
For low profile designs, Samsung has used improved designs to slim down the side camera. Despite the fact that consumer’s don’t like camera bumps, the company can do very little about it as it is the trade-off when using brighter and higher quality sensors.
However, Samsung did manage to shrink its sensor pixel size to as low as 0.9 and 1.0 µm because of their ISOCELL”s technology. Samsung will offer compact and high-resolution images without sacrificing a lot in terms of image quality because of this new technology
