They will be able to identify them using their URIs or avatars. API like addmessage() are for the person calls instead of charsequence.

Identify the type of conversation: You will now be able to identify whether a conversation is a group conversation or not. For that, you will have to use the setGroupConversation().

Setting Semantic Action: With the setSemanticAction() lets you give a semantic meaning to the action. For instance, reply, delete, read and much more.

SmartReply: There is no difference here, Android P has the same smart replies as the previous OS. RemoteInput.setChoices()  is used for this purpose.
