Several navigation apps are readily available, but Google Maps is the best among these apps. It is easy to use, simple, user-friendly and efficient. Despite being an outstanding app, it has its cons. The most prominent issue is Google Maps works best when you have a strong data connection. This isn’t much helpful, especially when traveling out of city or places where there is no internet or poor network connection.

Thankfully, Google also understood the dilemma and they have come up with a solution. You can now use Google Maps offline. However, this feature is rendered useless without a proactive procedure.

How to Access Google Maps Offline

For starters, you need to know the area of interest i.e. places that you plan to visit. Only then will you be able to take full advantage of Google Map’s offline feature. This is the proactive procedure that we mentioned above. It is imperative for you to download the map area before you leave the safety of your city’s strong connection.

You can download a large file, for instance, you can download the maps for two cities if you like. However, when downloading the maps of two cities, it means to download information regarding everything that is in them. It is going to take a good amount of your storage. Be ready to sacrifice about 1-2 GB.

The best way to go about this is downloading this information on your SD card. To do so, follow the steps below.

  1. Open the Menu in Google Maps.
  2. Tap on the offline Areas.
  3. Head to Setting, Storage Preferences and then Switch Device to SD card.

An important thing to remember here is that these Maps will expire after 1 month. Reason being, there is a constant change and to keep everything updated, Google refreshes everything. For instance, a new street is added or a new restaurant has opened around the corner. You will not know about it until Google does not update the map. So, every month a new and updated version of the map is available.

Old maps were once a problem, but since automating map updating game into the game, things have changed. You don’t have to think about it now, go to Setting, from there to Offline Maps and enable the automatic update feature. This ensures that the offline maps up to date. To further make things easy for you, you can select the option in which these maps update only when you are using Wi-Fi.

Several features of Google Maps online is not incorporated in the offline feature. You won’t be able to get information regarding the transit details, walking directions, bike routes, lane guidance and other things that make Google Maps stand out. The rest is the same, you will be able to find address, navigate to them. Just don’t expect full-fledged Google Maps, but then we believe something is better than nothing.

How to Store Google Maps Offline

Follow the steps below to save maps offline.

  1. Launch the app on your phone.
  2. Look for the place or the location that you want to download.
  3. A bar will appear at the bottom when you search for a specific place. In case it does not show up, press and hold anywhere on the map for it to appear.
  4. To display more option, tap on it.
  5. Now hit “Download” option.
  6. You can Zoom in and Zoom out to make the download section appear larger or smaller.
  7. Done selecting, tap on the download button located at the lower-right corner.
